Roof Gutter

Repair or Replacement - Northern Virginia, VA

The total surface area of you roof can easily add up to several hundred square feet. When you consider that amount of space and the volume of rain it captures during a downpour it’s a wonder your house doesn’t float away. Thanks to having a functioning roof gutter of the roof edge, all that water gets carried safely away. If it did not happen this way, you would have water coming through the windows, doors, siding and basement.

The roof has the responsibility of diverting rain and melt water away from the house beneath it. It is up to the roof gutter system to send it to where it will not do any damage. This will not happen if the gutters are filled with leaves and debris. On a house with older shingles, the granules wear off and fall into the gutter troughs. With nowhere to go the water can only back up under the shingles or overflow onto the ground or deck at the base of the house. The fascia board, soffits and sheathing along the edge of the roof eventually rot. You will end up with bad water leaks inside the exterior walls and windows.

Cleaning out the roof gutter system is the best way to ensure that water flows through it unobstructed. If you don’t clean out your gutters, a sort of organic muck is created from decomposing leaves and this becomes the soil where seeds can sprout and grow. You can try trimming tree branches and shrubs that hang over the roof to cut down on the amount of debris that falls into the gutter troughs. We recommend you have them cleaned out a couple times a year as a preventative measure.

If you decided to clean out the roof gutter troughs yourself, be very careful where you place the ladder. Avoid leaning it on the shingles or the gutters. Use an articulating ladder if you have one. You will need rubber gloves to protect your hands from the sharp edges and a bucket to collect the debris. Flush out the remaining sediment with a hose. Check over the fasteners and downspout strainers to make sure they are intact. If you notice damage to your roof while you are up there, call us for a free inspection.
