Your house might need a new paint job or a small repair here or there, but if you have a roof leak it should be treated as an emergency. Everything else you would like to do to upgrade your home can wait. Water will cause so much damage in the wrong places you can end up ripping out walls to remedy the effects.
The most obvious place to look for a roof leak is directly above the spot on the ceiling where you see dampness. You might be surprised when you get up to the attic to find no water dripping from the roof where you would expect. When water gets under the shingles and waterproof barrier it can be diverted along a seam in the roof sheathing and travel several feet before it drips through. You really need to have us give your entire roof a thorough inspection to find the source. There may be more than one leak causing the problem.
Long before you see water dripping from a ceiling in the house it has contacted structural materials that are not meant to get wet. Any wood structures, metal fasteners, electrical wiring or insulation exposed to excess moisture deteriorate quickly. Rust, corrosion, mold, mildew and rot set in.
Take a good look at the spot where you see water appearing from the ceiling. Is the drywall buckling badly? This means a lot of water is pooling in that area and the ceiling is getting ready to cave in. Poke a small hole in the center of the area with a screwdriver and let the water pour into a bucket. If it is running down through an electrical fixture, shut off the fixture and call us immediately. Now there is a risk of an electrical short and a fire. We will take care of an emergency roof leak at any time of the night or day.
There is no such thing as being overly concerned about a roof leak. It is a disaster waiting to happen. Prevention is the best action to take to stop water damage from destroying your home.
