The time when we think about taking care of the roof is most often in the autumn when we are also concerned with clearing out the gutters before winter. This is sensible, but it is advisable to check the roof more often than once a year. Visible leaks inside the house can take a few months to show up after a leak develops. In the meantime the water getting inside the house is doing damage to everything it contacts. This can be avoided painlessly with minor roof repairs.
Events happen throughout the seasons that take a toll on your roof. In the winter, ice dams cause melt water to back up underneath the shingles. This freezes overnight and forces the shingles up, cracking them and popping the roofing nails. During spring showers the loose shingles cannot possibly keep the rain out. Instead of rolling down the slope of the roof as it should, it seeps under the roofing membrane. From there, the water takes the path of least resistance and could end up anywhere in the house, including under the floorboards.
During the summer storm season when the winds are high, loose shingles don’t stand a chance. The whipping winds tear them loose and scatter them on the ground. Those that don’t get snapped off are lifted and cracked. The next time a torrential downpour occurs in your part of Northern Virginia, you will be running for buckets to catch the water pouring through the ceiling. If you are lucky, it won’t stream down the light fixtures and cause an electrical short or a fire.
As you can understand, waiting until late in the year when the leaves are falling to assess the condition of your roof may leave you open to some unexpected water damage. We will do a free roof inspection for you in any season and take care of roof repairs before excess water ruins the house. We will also be there any time of the day or night for an emergency situation. It is recommended that you maintain your roof carefully. It is the first line of defense between you and the elements.
