Roof Snow Removal

Northern Virginia Roof Snow Removal

A big fluffy blanket of snow on your roof surrounded with a fringe of glistening icicles makes your house look spectacular but it is an indication that you are having roof problems. When your attic is not insulated or ventilated adequately it cannot maintain a temperature that stabilizes the layer of snow on the roof. Eventually you will have to take action and remedy the situation that is allowing the attic to overheat. If you want to avoid serious damage that leads to water leaks, roof snow removal is your immediate solution.

There is a good reason why rood snow removal is important. Here is what happens when your attic is too warm in the winter…Keep in mind that hot air rises, so your attic becomes the focal point of the heat and humidity rising from the other rooms in the house. If there is not enough air circulation, where exterior air is drawn in through the soffit vents and discharged through the roof vents, the heat is trapped. It warms up the roof to the point where the snow contacting the top of the house begins to melt.

The melt water from the snow trickles down the slope of the roof and drips over the edge. At this point the melting snow is exposed to the freezing air and the cold edge of the roof. It turns to ice. It drips over the edge of the roof and icicles result. It also forms a ridge of ice along the full length of the roof edge. This is called an ice dam. As the dam builds, the melt water can’t get past it and has nowhere to go but back up under the shingles. Once water gets under the shingles it makes its way through the roof into the attic on a path of destruction.

Ice dams are the worst thing that can happen to your roof in the winter. In better weather you will want to have your roof and attic inspected and make sure the problems are resolved. For now make sure you do not allow the snow to pile up on the roof. You will save your house from a lot of unnecessary roof repairs.
