Solar Roof Fan
Benefits of Solar Roof Fan in Northern Virginia, VA

The last time you went up to your attic on a hot summer day did you nearly get knocked over by a wall of heat? If you did, this is a sign that your attic is not getting enough air circulation. Your attic should never be more than 10 or 15 degrees hotter than the outside air temperature or you will end up with a whole slew of problems with your roof. Many older houses did not have enough vents in the attic and roof. While newer homes may have enough vents, the vent screens to prevent birds, insects and critters from getting into the attic cut down on the volume of air flow. In either case of a roof solar fan will make the difference.

If you are concerned about your energy cost to heat and cool your home, the atmosphere in your attic needs to be fresh and breezy. Too much heat up there in the summer puts a strain on your air conditioning system. The hot air rising from the lower floors needs to escape to help cool down the house. A cool attic means your AC units kick in less and this saves energy. A roof solar fan draws off the heat and does not use electricity that you pay for.

Running appliances such as microwave ovens, dishwashers and dryers puts moisture in the air. Showers and damp basements output plenty of humidity. The steamy air rises to the top of your house and gets trapped in the attic, where it accumulates and condenses. It can either drip back down to the ceiling below and damage the drywall and plaster or it will encourage the growth of mildew and black mold. Not only does this make a nasty mess of your attic, but it starts rotting out the trusses and roof sheathing. If your roof vents are not doing the trick, the problem will be diminished with the installation of a roof solar fan.

In the winter, a healthy attic is indicated by snow on the top of the house without the presence of icicles hanging off the roof edge. When there is too much heat is the attic, it melts the snow and causes ice dams to form. These dams force melt water to back up under the shingles and ruin your roofing materials. We can inspect your roof for ventilation problems and recommend how to put it in order with a roof solar fan.
