 Roof Tiles

Shingle roofs are practical and relatively inexpensive to build, but if you are looking for a way to make your house look spectacular, clay roof tiles will do the job. Concrete tiles are just as effective and are generally less expensive. Both types last longer than most other types of roofing materials used predominantly in Northern Virginia. Depending on the manufacturer you can get a warranty for 50 years or more.

It is hard to say for sure how long clay roof tiles will last but we know there are ancient structures in other countries with tile roofs that are hundreds of years old. Tile can withstand weather conditions that no other roofing material can. Asphalt shingles and wood shakes start to deteriorate the moment they are installed but clay and concrete tiles are virtually unaffected.

Roof tiles are available in beautiful colors, sizes and shapes. They are manufactured to suit all architectural styles including Mediterranean, Spanish and New England Colonial. They can be made to simulate wood shakes or antiques roofing materials in almost any color. Raw pigments in the actual clay and dense glazes protect the tiles from fading.

One of the benefits of roof tiles is the additional insulation value they create, helping to warm the house in the winter and cool it in the summer. The air space between the roof deck and the tiles creates air circulation that decreases heat transfer to the roof and discourages the formation of ice dams. Tiles are noncombustible, making them a fire retardant with a class-A rating. This helps to lower the insurance premium on your house.

Check with the local city codes to determine the requirements for additional support on the roof if you decide to use roof tiles. We can help you find the information for the city where you live. There may also be specific regulations for the type of waterproof underlayment that can be used.

Roof tiles are extremely durable. In violent storms and hail storms where most other types off roofing materials take a beating, tile can make it through the event unscathed. They require very little maintenance, make your house look great and up the resale value of your home.
