 Roof Ventilation

    Serving Virginia, VA

Do you have a stuffy attic? It may not mean much if you don’t go up there often, but at as a roof maintenance issue it is very important. The attic plays a major role as a buffer between the interior temperature of your home and the exterior air temperature. Believe it or not, the degree of heat in the attic needs to be close to the outside reading, even on cold days. When the gap is too wide, the roofing materials cool down faster than the attic and this causes the humidity to condensate. The only way to remedy this is to increase the amount of roof ventilation.

Think about all the ways humidity is created in your home. The bathroom, kitchen and laundry room are prime sources. A damp basement, condensation on plumbing and dripping air conditioning units add more to the mix. The humidity rises to the attic with the warm air in the house.

Condensation in the attic sets off a chain reaction that does a lot of costly damage to your house. When the underside of the roof sheathing gets wet it grows mildew and mold. It can swell up and split or buckle, breaking the watertight seal. When a lot of condensation accumulates it trickles down into the house like a water leak or it saturates the insulation. Wet insulation grows black mold. It loses R-value and fails to regulate the temperature in the rooms below. You will notice your energy consumption going up.

If you are having any of these problems we can do a permanent fix by increasing the amount roof ventilation in your attic. Adding gable end vents, roof vents and roof fans make the difference. Clean, fresh air needs to be pulled from the soffit vents and carry the humidity out through the other vents.

We will do a free inspection of your attic to assess it for potential or existing problems. It is far better to have us fix the roof ventilation than to wait until entire sections of the roof are destroyed by excess moisture. Don’t wait until the damage is out of control. Call us now and save money.
